How To Prepare Your Mobility Scooter For The Winter Months
This entry was posted in November 23, 2023With the colder, darker days upon us again, it’s important to ensure your mobility scooter is correctly maintained during this time of the year. The majority of our Ableworld Mobility Scooters are robust and durable but with that being said the British weather isn’t one to be messed with. So, if you’re needing to use your mobility scooter over the next few months, the Ableworld Reading team have come up with a few helpful tips to ensure your maintaining the integrity and longevity of your scooter for years to come.
Charging your Batteries regularly
You may think that bad weather and mobility scooters don’t match and it's more hassle than it’s worth to use your mobility scooter during this period. But your mobility is fully functional and can withstand all sorts of weather conditions - in fact mobility scooters are designed with the winter months in mind. To ensure you maximise the battery power of your scooter, always ensure its fully charged or has sufficient charge for your onward journey before using. 12 hours is the minimum charge time for a scooter battery so popping it on charge before you settle down for bed is the best way forward.
Use a Scooter Canopy
Whether it’s wet or windy, a scooter canopy will be your best friend. This scooter accessory will mean your journey can be as comfortable and enjoyable as possible, allowing you to battle the elements without fear. Browse our scooter canopies and scooter covers online or in-store at Reading today.
Extra Winter Protection
Staying visible is a key factor when out and about in the winter, as daylight hours are a lot shorter during this time of the year. And now our new Ableworld Reading has been relocated to bigger premises, the journey to get to store can sometimes be busier as the roads are vehicle heavy - so staying visible is more important than ever. Store Manager Abdul recommends the Hi-visibility slipover scooter bag, it’s both strong and durable and its hi-visibility features ensures you have a higher chance of being seen in the dark, so you can always get to store safely.
Check your Tyres
The main concern among mobility users in the winter is ‘‘Are my tyres going to grip in the Winter?’’ The answer is ‘YES’ but only if your tyres are properly maintained. Good traction means a safe experience for the user on their mobility scooter, but in winter months the pressure on your tyres is more intense than other conditions due to slippery road and pavement surfaces. This means the cold weather can often impact the tyre pressure, so it is very important to check your tyres regularly for wear and damage.
Winter Scooter Servicing
We offer scooter servicing throughout the year at Ableworld but encourage a Winter scooter service for extra piece of mind and reassurance for our customers. Please contact your Ableworld Reading store or your local Ableworld store to book in or find out more.
